This is a renovation project for an apartment unit in a 30-year-old building.

Its wide frontage toward the south was very attractive, but the existing plan was stereotypical of its time of completion in Japan, which unfortunately prevented the unit from benefiting from its wide frontage. Furthermore, the existing kitchen was closed off and separated from the main living area, making it unideal for the client who wanted to enjoy the scenery from the wide frontage and be able to communicate with the family.

The first step included removing most of the existing partitions – except those of the bathroom – to create a single open space. Then three gently-curved walls with 20-centimeter clearances from the ceiling were inserted.

The walls create a variety of spaces for each family member, while maintaining privacy. At the same time, openings in the walls connect the family through the spaces. The separation and connection are never static. As one walks through the apartment, relationships between the spaces and the family are ever-changing.

At night the lights emanate from the top of the walls and reflect off the ceiling, creating a figurative extension of the wall to the ceiling, and at the same time this opening – along with the openings in the walls, create connections between the individual rooms and the main space.
