アムステルダム市内にある築85年の集合住宅の２層を占める住宅の改修計画です。オランダ育ちではないクライアントからの要望は、薄暗い天気の多いオランダで太陽光を最大限取り入れること。そして家族が家の中でお互いを感じとれるようにしたいということでした。

もともと４階と５階をつなぐ階段の上にはトップライトがありましたが、そこから入り込む光が家の他の部分に行くのを階段とそれを取り囲む壁が遮っていました。私たちはそれらを取り去ることで、家中にトップライトからの光が行き渡るようにしました。更に５階の床の一部を取り去ることで生まれた２層の吹抜を通じて、家族がお互いの気配を感じることができるようになりました。

吹抜にある特徴的な塔は、既存の排水経路を活かすために水廻り（キッチン・バス・トイレ）をまとめたものです。塔の周りを巡るように新しい階段を透過性のある素材でつくり、家族が生活の様々な場面で出会う仕掛けとしました。

This is a renovation project of a duplex unit in an 85-year-old housing complex for a family of four: an Italian husband, Japanese wife, and their two children. Both husband and wife were not brought up in Amsterdam where the weather is usually gloomy. They requested maximum sunlight throughout the house, as well as spaces that allowed them to feel each other’s’ presence.

Originally, there was a skylight at the top of the staircase that connects the upper and lower floors and which allowed for lots of sunlight in the staircase, however, the stairs and walls around them prevented the light from entering into other parts of the house. To allow sunlight to spread throughout the house, we took away the stairs, walls, and a part of the upper floor, creating a void that connects the family.

We placed a symbolic tower-shaped element spanning two floors and in which the kitchen, bathroom, and toilets are lodged. By placing the tower where we did, we were also able to utilize the existing pipe box. For the stairs, we placed grating stair treads around the tower for transparency and circulation, thereby allowing the family to create and enjoy various scenes of their daily life.
